“I Led Three Lives” is a recent project by Ilhan Ersahin, the renowned saxophonist, producer and composer living in New York. The artist, who keeps producing, likes “music of all kinds” and this led to his appetite for having “a bunch of different bands and projects… and friends”. In this project, Ersahin performs together with two other legendary musicians: one of them is the bassist Juini Booth, who shared the scene with Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, Tony Williams’ Lifetime, Coleman Hawkins, Albert Ayler, Chuck Mangione, Sun Ra and McCoy Tyner; during his career of more than 30 years. The other one is the Wax Poetic drummer, Jochen Rueckert; being also an electronica and remix genius.
The music of the trio is a jazz fusion, also inspired by punk rock. Although difficult to define, one can definitely say that this energetic music brightens the last decade of jazz and electronica.
The performance in Babylon was consisted of a very long improvisation: the band did not stop playing for more than one hour! The concert was coloured by Ersahin’s saxophone solos, keyboard accompaniments, with synth and rhodes. Besides, Rueckert also used sampler with effects and filters. Another surprise of the concert was the two rappers who suddenly jumped to the stage: while dancing themselves, they got the audience dancing! All in all, the performance reflected the enthusiastic, free, striking self-expression of all the musicians involved.
For the ones who missed the performance, the good news is that the trio’s brand-new EP is now available: “Peace Now” is released on 30 September 2008 by Nublu Records, owned by Ersahin.
